6 Smart Ways to Finish the School Year Strong

As the school year winds down, it’s easy for students (and parents!) to start shifting into summer mode. But these last few weeks of school are still important — not just for grades and test results, but for building momentum, confidence, and good habits that carry into the next school year.

Here are six smart, simple ways to help your child finish strong:

1. Check in on grades and missing work

Before report cards are finalized, now’s the time to log into your school’s parent portal and look for any missing assignments, low test scores, or chances to improve. Even one or two late submissions or test retakes could boost a final grade.

2. Stick with routines

It’s tempting to ease up on bedtime, screen time, or homework habits — especially after testing ends. But staying consistent with routines can help your child stay focused and avoid last-minute stress.

3. Celebrate growth, not just outcomes

Take a moment to reflect with your child on how far they’ve come this year. Maybe reading clicked into place, or math became less intimidating. Recognizing progress builds confidence and helps your child see learning as a journey.

4. Review IEP or 504 accommodations

If your child has an IEP or 504 Plan, now’s a good time to touch base with their teachers or case manager. Make sure this year’s accommodations were helpful — and start thinking about what might need to change for next year.

5. Ask the teacher what’s next

Many teachers are happy to share insights on what your child is ready for next. A quick email asking what skills to focus on over the summer — or even what books to read — can help your child avoid summer slide.

6. Make a summer learning plan

Even just a few hours a week of academic practice can make a huge difference. Whether it’s a workbook, reading challenge, or a few tutoring sessions, planning now can make summer smoother and more purposeful.

At Thrive Tutoring, we’re here to help families navigate every part of the learning journey — from test prep and tutoring to IEP advocacy and summer support.
